The importance of high temperature lubricants
High lubricant temperatures play a key role in maintaining the performance and durability of machines operating in extreme thermal conditions. These specialty lubricants are designed to withstand elevated temperatures without losing their lubricating properties, ensuring smooth operation and preventing costly equipment failures.
Basic features of high temperature greases:
- Thermal Stability : High temperature greases are formulated to resist thermal degradation while maintaining their consistency and lubricating properties even at elevated temperatures.
- Antioxidant properties : Contain additives that prevent oxidation, which can lead to harmful deposits and deposits in machinery.
- Water Resistance : Some high temperature greases are also water resistant, providing protection in humid or wet environments.
How to choose high temperature grease?
When choosing a high temperature grease, consider the following factors:
- Determine the actual temperature range. The operating temperature may be lower than you think. Use a contact or non-contact sensor to measure the operating temperature of the grease. Does it exceed 392ºF (200ºC)?
- Is it intermittent or continuous? If it is continuous, look for a high-end product that meets operational requirements.
- Do heating and cooling cycles accompany periods when machines are on and off? Consider whether moisture can be induced by the atmosphere or machine steam shocks
- What is a reasonable grease replacement interval or possibility of grease replacement? If relubrication is going to be difficult, consider a high-end product for lower operating costs, even if it is more expensive.
- Consider any cosmetic issues. Can product drip onto the element during the process? The frequency and volume of relubrication must be balanced with product contamination issues.
Types of high temperature greases :
- High temperature molybdenum and graphite grease : Used in bearings, trolley wheels, fans, film tensioner chains, etc.
- High-temperature silicone grease : Resistant to the external environment.
- Copper grease : Often used in braking systems and industrial machinery components.
- Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) oil-based products : Used in the chemical industry, in fuel and chemical tanks
By selecting the right high-temperature lubricants for specific applications, companies can improve equipment performance, reduce maintenance costs and increase overall productivity. With specially designed high-temperature greases, these problems can be solved.
Many of the advanced oils used in high temperature greases (fluorinated polyethers, perfluro polyethers, phenolic polyethers, silicones, etc.) will last longer than their thickening systems.
Applications of high temperature greases:
- Automotive : In wheel bearings, constant velocity joints and other components operating at high temperatures.
- Industry : In steel mills, foundries, furnaces and other high heat industrial processes.
- Aviation : In aircraft engines, landing gear and other critical components operating at extreme temperatures.
High temperature greases are often used in the lubrication of parts such as:
- Rolling mill bearings
- Crushing and screening machines
- Roller bearings for gluing, paper converting and drying machines
- Furnace grates and furnace fire rollers
- Bearings for oven fans
- Hot mix asphalt plants
- Conveyors, industrial painting lines
- Equipment for space applications (300 degree high temperature grease is preferred choice)
- Water pumps and electric motors
