Shell OMALA S4 WE
Advanced Synthetic Gear Oil
Previous product name: Shell Tivela S
Shell Omala S4 WE is an advanced, synthetic industrial gear oil for use in highly loaded worm gears. The formulation based on polyalkylglycol (PAG) and an excellent additive package provides excellent operating properties in difficult operating conditions, providing energy savings, friction reduction, extended drain intervals and high resistance to micro-pitting.

Application:
- Closed Industrial Worm Gears
Shell Omala S4 WE is recommended for worm gears operating under severe conditions, i.e. high loads, very low or high operating temperatures, large temperature fluctuations.
- Systems with extended service intervals
Shell Omala S4 WE is recommended for equipment operating under severe conditions, where oil changes are infrequent and long drain intervals are required and due to difficult accessibility (e.g. wind turbine gearboxes).
- Other uses
- Shell Omala S4 WE is not recommended for the lubrication of gear system components made of aluminium or its alloys.
- For heavily loaded gear or helical gears, Shell Omala "G" products are recommended. For hypoid gears used in vehicles, Shell Spirax products must be used.
Features and benefits
- Long replacement intervals – lower maintenance costs
- Excellent anti-wear protection
Shell Omala S4 WE transfers loads perfectly, providing excellent component durability even under shock conditions. It also protects against
occurrence of the phenomenon of "micro-pitting". These properties provide a significant advantage over mineral lubricants in terms of the durability of gears and bearings.
- Efficient operation of systems

Specifications and Approvals
- DIN 51517-3 (CLP)
- Approved by Bonfiglioli
Compatibility and Miscibility
- Compatibility with sealants and paints
It is recommended to use high-quality epoxy paints, as well as other paints resistant to polyalkylglycols.
Shell Omala S4 WE performs excellently with both nitrile and Viton seals. However, Viton seals are preferred.
Exchange procedure
Shell Omala S4 WE contains a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) base stock which is not compatible with mineral oil or other synthetic oils. When changing this type of oil to Omala S4 WE oil, a special change procedure should be used and the lack of miscibility with other base oils should be taken into account.
Prior to a full change, the transmission system should be flushed with a minimum amount of Shell Omala S4 WE oil, by running the system without load until it warms up and then the warm oil must be removed from the system.
Seals that work with mineral oil should be removed and replaced with PAG compatible ones. The system should be checked after replacement after a few days
use to check the oil cleanliness and contamination of the system.
Shell Omala S4 WE is also not miscible with some other polyalkylene glycol oils, which should be taken into account when topping up the oil level in the system.
Occupational safety and environmental protection
The product does not pose a direct threat to health and safety when used correctly for its intended purpose and in accordance with personal hygiene.
Avoid contact with skin. Use protective gloves. In case of skin contact, wash off oil with soap and water.
