Anti-friction coatings are protective layers that are applied to metal surfaces or other materials such as plastic or ceramics to increase their durability and wear resistance. Anti-friction coatings are widely used in various industries, such as automotive, aerospace, engineering, as well as in the mining and metallurgy industries. In the ABS Lubricants online store, you can order high-quality products that are characterized by high hardness and wear resistance.

Anti-friction coatings - characteristics

Anti-friction coatings are obtained by various methods. By oxidizing metals or metal alloys, oxidizing carbon or metal carbides, or applying ceramic layers. They are widely used in industry, where they provide protection of machine and tool elements against wear and friction.

Extending the life of machine elements by applying coatings of high hardness and high abrasion resistance to their surfaces can be a very effective way to reduce operating costs. It is worth remembering, however, that it does not have to be necessary on the entire surface of a given element - it is enough to apply such a coating only in places exposed to particularly intensive wear. Thanks to this, it is possible to use cheaper, lower-quality material to make the entire element, and only sensitive places will be refined by applying a properly selected coating. In this way, significant savings can be achieved while ensuring the high quality and durability of the entire machine.

Types of anti-friction coatings

There are many types of anti-friction coatings. They differ in chemical composition, method of application and properties. Here are some of the most commonly used:

  • Ceramic coatings are layers based on aluminum, titanium, chromium and zirconium oxides. They are widely used in many different fields due to their high hardness, wear resistance and high melting point. Plasma spraying is often used to apply them to the surfaces of machine elements, which allows to obtain a thin, even and durable layer with excellent properties.

  • Carbide coatings are one of the hardest and most wear-resistant materials used to protect the surface of machine elements. For their production, mainly tungsten carbide (WC-Co, WC-Co-Cr) and chromium carbide (Cr3C2-NiCr) are used. Both of these materials are characterized by high resistance to friction, corrosion and high temperatures, making them perfect for a wide variety of applications. Carbide coatings can be applied by both plasma and supersonic spraying, depending on the needs and requirements of the application. Both methods allow to obtain a thin, even and durable layer with excellent properties.

  • Molybdenum coatings are one of the hardest and most abrasion-resistant materials used to protect the surface of machine elements. They are made of molybdenum (Mo) and are characterized by very high hardness and resistance to friction and corrosion. Molybdenum coatings can be applied to various types of substrates, depending on the technology and application parameters, their microhardness can range from 550 to 1300HV. Various methods are used to apply molybdenum coatings, such as flame, plasma or supersonic spraying.

The use of anti-friction coatings

Anti-friction coatings are widely used in various industries where high resistance to wear and friction is required. Here are some examples of anti-friction coating applications:

  • Anti-friction coatings are widely used in the automotive industry, where they are used to protect engine components, gearboxes, suspension and other components of the car. Recently, one of the products that are gaining in popularity are engine oils with the addition of molybdenum disulfide, which forms a protective coating on engine components that reduces friction.

  • They are also used in the aviation industry, where they are used to protect aircraft engine components, propellers, steering systems and other components.

  • Anti-friction coatings used in the engineering industry, where they are used to protect machine elements, tools, injection molds and other components.

  • In the mining and metallurgical industries, they are used to protect machine elements, tools and injection molds.

AFC lubricants

Anti-Friction Coatings (AFC) are special lubricants that are applied to the surfaces of machine components to increase their resistance to friction and abrasion. These types of coatings are characterized by high strength and durability, and their use allows to significantly extend the life of machine elements exposed to difficult conditions, heavy loads and a wide range of temperatures.

AFC is most often applied by spraying and then cured by UV light or heat. Depending on the specific product, curing may occur at room temperature or require high temperature baking. Thanks to this, it is possible to obtain a thin, even and durable protective layer with excellent anti-friction properties.

AFC greases are especially recommended for machine elements exposed to intense friction and loads, such as shafts, gears, bearings and cams. Their use allows to reduce friction and wear of machine elements, and thus ensure their longer life and lower operating costs.

Anti-Friction Coatings (AFC) are lubricants that provide a solid long-term protective coating on surfaces exposed to harsh conditions, heavy loads and a wide range of temperatures. They are usually applied by spraying and cured by UV light at room temperature or by heat (need to be fired at high temperature).
