Silicone grease applications - types and principles of proper use

Silicone grease is one of the most versatile technical agents used for protecting, maintaining, and lubricating components made of rubber, plastics, ceramics, glass, and some metals. It is characterized by very good resistance to water, aging, oxidation, and temperature changes. However, it should not be treated as a universal lubricant for every mechanism. The proper selection of silicone grease should consider the material of the lubricated components, operating temperature, movement speed, load, presence of water, hygienic requirements, and method of application.

The phrase "silicone grease application" covers a very broad group of products. This can include light silicone liquid, aerosol preparations, thick sealant paste, valve grease, vacuum system lubricant, or specialized grease for very low or high-temperature operation. Therefore, before purchasing, you should check not only the product name but also its viscosity, consistency class, temperature range, and material compatibility.

What exactly is silicone grease?

Typical silicone grease is formed by thickening silicone oil with a suitably chosen thickener. The base oil is most often polydimethylsiloxane, abbreviated as PDMS. Depending on the product's intended use, silica, lithium, or inorganic thickeners are used, as well as additives to improve oxidation resistance, corrosion protection, adhesion, or sealing properties.

Silicone grease can have the consistency of light oil, gel, petroleum jelly, or a compact paste. A good example of a basic preparation is Standard Silicone Grease, available at sklepsmary.pl. It is a paste obtained by thickening methyl silicone oils with suitable fillers. It has a consistency similar to petroleum jelly, is slightly thixotropic, water-resistant, and exhibits good electrical insulation properties.

Thixotropy means that when squeezed, mixed, or spread, the product becomes more fluid, but when left at rest, it increases its viscosity again. This makes the grease easy to apply to the surface, but it should not flow spontaneously from the application site.

Key properties of silicone greases

The popularity of silicone greases results from a combination of several beneficial features. First and foremost, they tolerate contact with water and moisture well. The grease layer limits water penetration to the contact point, protects the seal from drying out, and can facilitate subsequent disassembly of components.

Another advantage is temperature stability. Depending on the formulation, specialized silicone greases can operate at very low temperatures as well as at temperatures exceeding 150–200°C. However, this does not mean that every silicone product has an identical operating range. A common maintenance paste, high-temperature bearing grease, and valve compound are three different products, even though their base may be silicone oil.

Silicones are also valued for their resistance to oxidation and aging. In many conditions, they do not harden as quickly as typical mineral oil-based agents. They are also often compatible with rubber and numerous plastics. In each case, however, it is worth conducting a compatibility test, especially if the exact type of elastomer is unknown.

An important property is also electrical insulation. Silicone greases can protect electrical connections from moisture, but it is necessary to distinguish between dielectric protection and electrical conductivity. Ordinary silicone grease is not a conductive preparation and should not be applied thoughtlessly directly to contact surfaces that must maintain very low resistance.

Silicone grease – types of available preparations

The phrase silicone grease types can refer to consistency, application method, and product purpose. The simplest division includes silicone oils, spray preparations, plastic pastes and greases, and specialized sealing compounds.

Greases for rubber, O-rings, and seals

This is one of the most important applications of silicone products. Grease reduces friction during assembly, protects the seal edge from curling, protects rubber from drying out, and facilitates proper seating of the O-ring in its groove.

The sklepsmary.pl offer includes, among others, MOLYKOTE 55 O-Ring silicone grease, designed specifically for lubricating rubber O-rings. This preparation can be used wherever good slip, durable protection, and appropriate interaction between the grease and the elastomer are expected. Molykote 55 O-Ring is a technical solution for seals, not an ordinary maintenance paste.

For valves, water installations, taps, fittings, and pressure systems, MOLYKOTE 111 Compound is intended. It is a thick compound based on silicone oil and an inorganic thickener. It is characterized by very good water resistance, high adhesion, and low volatility. It can be used, among others, for lubricating control valves, fittings, gaskets, rubber and plastic O-rings, and installation components exposed to frequent washing.

Molykote 111 is particularly useful in places where ordinary grease would be quickly washed away. The product is also used in outdoor equipment, marine devices, electrical boxes, and installations exposed to harsh environmental conditions.

Greases for plastics and low temperatures

Not every mineral grease is suitable for plastics. Some oils can cause swelling, dullness, brittleness, or surface tension in certain types of plastic. Therefore, in mechanisms with plastic components, appropriately selected silicone greases are often used.

An example is MOLYKOTE 33 Medium. This is a silicone grease with NLGI 2 consistency, characterized by water resistance, oxidation resistance, and good properties at low temperatures. It is intended for lubricating plastic and rubber components and mechanisms that must remain mobile in freezing conditions.

Molykote 33 Medium can be considered for precision mechanisms, guides, control devices, meters, small gears, automotive components, and outdoor equipment. In the case of delicate plastics, material compatibility should always be checked, as the term "plastic" covers many polymers with different properties.

In similar applications, MOLYKOTE 33 Light is used. It has a lighter consistency, so it may work better in mechanisms with lower movement resistance, where too thick a grease would limit operating speed or hinder cold starts.

High-temperature silicone greases

A silicone oil base allows for the design of preparations capable of operating at temperatures where classic mineral greases quickly oxidize, carbonize, or lose their proper consistency.

This group includes MOLYKOTE 41, designed for mechanisms and bearings operating at high temperatures. The product can be used, among others, in heating devices, dryers, conveyors, and furnace cars, provided that the movement and load parameters correspond to its specifications.

Another example is MOLYKOTE 44 Medium, The shop does not stock this grease. used, among others, in fan bearings, dryers, ovens, and equipment whose components are exposed to elevated temperatures for extended periods.

However, it should be remembered that the thermal resistance of grease is not equivalent to its ability to bear very heavy loads. High temperature, high speed, and high pressure are three separate parameters. Grease designed for a hot fan bearing may not be suitable for a heavily loaded bearing in a press.

Greases for vacuum systems

In vacuum installations, very low volatility and low vapor pressure of the lubricant are important. Ordinary oil or improperly selected grease can evaporate, contaminate the chamber, degrade the vacuum achieved, and deposit on equipment.

MOLYKOTE High Vacuum Grease is a specialized silicone grease designed for valves, connections, seals, ground joints, and components of vacuum systems. Its purpose is to simultaneously reduce friction and assist in sealing the connection. The product is used in laboratories, research apparatus, industrial installations, and devices where low volatility of the lubricant is required.

Mold release greases and agents

Silicone is characterized by good anti-adhesive properties. For this reason, silicone oils and greases are used as release agents in molds, during rubber and plastic processing, and in processes where the product must not adhere to the technological surface.

An example of such a preparation is MOLYKOTE 7 Release Compound. The shop does not stock this grease. The product forms a slippery and separating layer that facilitates removing the part from the mold. It can also be used as an auxiliary for lubricating certain seals and plastic components.

Before using a silicone agent in production, however, subsequent process steps must be considered. Silicone remaining on the surface of the part can hinder painting, gluing, printing, or coating application.

Silicone grease in a tube – when is it the best choice?

Silicone grease in a tube usually has the consistency of a paste or thick grease. Such packaging allows for precise dosing of the product directly onto an O-ring, seal, guide, valve, or small mechanism component.

A tube is a good choice for assembly work, fitting service, household appliance repairs, seal maintenance, and lubricating components that can be reached by hand. Thick grease remains at the application site and forms a more durable layer than a light aerosol.

Small packages include Standard Silicone Grease and specialized MOLYKOTE 111. The first may be suitable for basic lubrication and maintenance. The second is an industrial solution primarily intended for valves, seals, O-rings, and installations exposed to water.

When applying grease from a tube, do not overdo the quantity. In many applications, a thin, even layer is sufficient. Excess grease can collect dust, hinder assembly, increase movement resistance, or get into unwanted parts of the device.

Silicone spray grease – advantages and limitations

Silicone spray grease is easy to spread over a large area and reaches places that are difficult to access with a brush or finger. After spraying, it forms a thin, slippery, hydrophobic, and protective layer.

Spray can be used for rubber door and window seals, plastic guides, car equipment components, locks, low-load hinges, roller blinds, garden equipment, and as an anti-adhesive preparation. In industry, it is also used for molds, work tables, guides, and conveying elements.

However, aerosol preparations have less precision than silicone grease in a tube. The mist can settle on adjacent surfaces, the floor, components intended for painting, or materials that are later to be glued. Silicone contamination in a paint shop can lead to the formation of characteristic craters and coating defects.

Before spraying, adjacent components must be protected, adequate ventilation ensured, and information regarding the flammability of the carrier and propellant checked. The layer after solvent evaporation may be colorless, but the aerosol itself often contains flammable substances during application.

Application of silicone grease in the home

In the household, silicone grease is primarily used for rubber seals, valves, guides, and plastic components. It can be used to protect window and door seals from sticking during frost, maintain rubber fittings, lubricate flush mechanisms, valves, water filter O-rings, and garden equipment seals.

The preparation can facilitate the assembly of hoses, O-rings, and press-fit components. However, a small amount should be used, and it should be confirmed that the device manufacturer allows the given type of lubricant.

For devices that come into contact with drinking water, food, or cosmetics, only products with appropriate approvals should be chosen. The mere fact that the grease is silicone does not automatically mean that it is suitable for contact with food or potable water.

Silicone grease in automotive

In cars, silicone grease is mainly used for maintaining rubber door, trunk, and sunroof seals. It reduces rubber freezing, improves slip, and protects against drying out. It can also be used for certain plastic guides, rubber covers, grommets, connectors, and mounting components.

However, it should not be applied directly to steering wheels, pedals, tire treads, drive belts, or surfaces that require high grip. In these areas, slipperiness is a disadvantage, not an advantage.

In automotive applications, particular caution should be exercised with the braking system.

Silicone grease for brakes – can it be used?

The term silicone grease for brakes is sometimes understood too broadly. Ordinary silicone grease should not be applied to brake discs, the friction surface of brake pads, drums, or linings. Any greasing of these surfaces can drastically reduce braking effectiveness.

Special silicone grease can be used in specific areas of the braking system, for example, for rubber seals, some caliper guide pins, or mounting components, but only if the vehicle or component manufacturer permits such a product.

Grease for caliper guides must be resistant to temperature, water, and brake fluid, and compatible with the rubber used in boots and seals. Not every product labeled "silicone" meets these requirements. Therefore, specialized brake grease should not be replaced with ordinary silicone paste intended for household seals.

The rule is simple: friction surfaces must remain perfectly clean and degreased, while lubricants should only be used in technically designated points.

Where not to use silicone grease?

The question of where not to use silicone grease is as important as the question of its advantages. Silicone is not a universal substitute for bearing, gear, copper, ceramic, or graphite grease.

First and foremost, ordinary silicone grease should not be used on the friction surfaces of brakes, clutches, and other mechanisms that need to generate friction. It should not be applied to V-belts, conveyor belts, or gripping surfaces, as it can cause slippage.

It is not a suitable choice for heavily loaded gears, joints, wheel bearings, or slow-moving pins under very high pressure, if the mechanism manufacturer requires grease with EP, MoS₂, graphite, or other solid lubricants. Typical silicone protects rubber and plastics well, but it does not always have sufficient load capacity for heavily loaded metal-to-metal contact.

Silicone grease should also be avoided on surfaces intended for subsequent painting, varnishing, printing, or gluing. Even a trace amount of silicone can weaken adhesive adhesion or cause paint defects.

Caution is needed with electrical connections. Silicone grease can protect the connection from moisture, but it is an insulator. It should not be poured over contact surfaces if the connector design does not provide mechanical penetration of the grease layer and reliable metal-to-metal contact.

It should also not be mixed with any random grease remaining in the device. Different thickeners and base oils may be incompatible. Before changing the type of grease, the mechanism should be thoroughly cleaned, if possible.

How to properly apply silicone grease?

The first step is to clean the surface of dust, old grease, sand, oil, and detergent residues. Contaminants trapped under a layer of new grease can act as an abrasive paste.

For an O-ring or seal, a thin layer spread evenly around the entire circumference is usually sufficient. The component should be moistened with grease, but not coated with it. Excessive amounts do not improve protection and can attract contaminants.

During assembly, use clean gloves, a brush, or an applicator. It is not advisable to put a dirty tool into a large container, as this can contaminate the entire contents.

In the case of a spray product, spray from an appropriate distance and apply several thin layers instead of one very thick one. Excess can be removed with a clean, lint-free cloth.

How to choose the right silicone grease?

First, you need to determine the materials forming the friction pair. A different product will be needed for a rubber O-ring, another for a plastic guide, and yet another for a steel bearing operating in a furnace.

Other parameters include minimum and maximum temperature, movement speed, load, and contact with water, chemicals, vacuum, or food. The appropriate consistency should also be chosen.

For seals and valves, a thick product like MOLYKOTE 111 is suitable. For plastic components operating in freezing temperatures, MOLYKOTE 33 Light or Medium can be considered. For vacuum installations, specialized MOLYKOTE High Vacuum Grease will be needed. For standard maintenance of small rubber and plastic components, basic Standard Silicone Grease may suffice.

When lubricating bearings, rotational speed, bearing diameter, clearance, load, and re-lubrication method must also be considered. The temperature range alone given on the label is not sufficient for proper selection.

Where to buy silicone grease?

Those wondering where to buy silicone grease should pay attention not only to the price but also to the availability of technical parameters, product data sheets, and expert selection. A product sold without information about its chemical base, temperature range, and intended use can be difficult to apply safely.

The online store sklepsmary.pl offers both basic silicone products in small packages and specialized industrial greases from brands such as MOLYKOTE, Rocol, Weicon, and many other manufacturers. The offer includes products for O-rings, seals, valves, plastic components, vacuum installations, and mechanisms operating in low and high temperatures.

Before purchasing, it is worth answering a few questions: what material is to be lubricated, at what temperature does the mechanism operate, is there contact with water, what is the load, and are certificates for drinking water or the food industry required. This allows for choosing a product truly suited to the application, rather than being guided solely by the label "silicone."

Summary

Silicone grease is an excellent solution for rubber, plastics, seals, O-rings, valves, and many mechanisms operating in contact with water or across a wide temperature range. Depending on its formulation, it can act as a lubricant, sealant, electrical insulator, preservative, or release agent.

However, there is no single silicone grease suitable for everything. Silicone grease in a tube provides precise application and a durable layer on seals. Silicone spray makes it easy to cover large surfaces and hard-to-reach areas. Specialized products such as MOLYKOTE 33, MOLYKOTE 55 O-Ring, MOLYKOTE 111, MOLYKOTE 41, MOLYKOTE 44, or MOLYKOTE High Vacuum, meet specific industrial requirements.

The most important thing is to observe limitations. Silicone grease should not be used on the friction surfaces of brakes, clutches, belts, and other components requiring adhesion. It should also not be applied to surfaces intended for painting or gluing, nor should it replace high-pressure greases in heavily loaded nodes.

Properly selected silicone grease can significantly reduce seal wear, facilitate assembly, protect the mechanism from water, and extend its trouble-free operation. Incorrectly selected, it can increase resistance, contaminate the surface, or fail to provide the required protection. Therefore, selection should always begin with the operating conditions, and only then proceed to choosing a specific tube, spray, or industrial package. Below is a table with silicone-based lubricating products that I did not include in the article from the following companies: Ambersil, CT-CARD, CX-8-, DEPAC, EVIL Lubricants, Kema, LOCTITE, Lubrina, Malwa, Normatek, OKS, Pulsar, Silesia, Elkalub.
